Our Shya Red Cabernet Sauvignon comes from some of the oldest blocks at our certified-organic Konnowac Estate Vineyard, planted in the late 1980s. These mature vines produce fruit with remarkable depth, structure and elegance, making it easy to understand why this wine has become the flagship of Pomum.
The Vintage
A cool spring delayed bud break by a couple of weeks, but warmer weather arrived in May and quickly moved vine development ahead of schedule. Low yields helped the fruit ripen early, and harvest began in September. Picking progressed at a steady, manageable pace through mid-October, allowing us to bring in each block when the fruit was ready.
The Vineyard
Planted in 1987 in the western Yakima Valley, Konnowac is the heart of our Pomum wines. Years of organic farming and careful attention in the vineyard have helped us understand what each block does best. For Shya Red, we select Cabernet Sauvignon from the oldest plantings, where mature vines produce fruit with a distinctive sense of place.
The Wine
Sourced from a Cabernet Sauvignon block planted in 1989, our 2023 Shya Red is rich and full-bodied while holding onto the elegance that defines Pomum. Layers of blackberry, red and black cherry are joined by violets, dried herbs, tobacco and a subtle earthy note. Eighteen months in French oak, half of it new, adds depth and structure without overpowering the fruit. Bright acidity, firm tannins and a juicy finish make it delicious now, with everything it needs to age beautifully through 2033. Only 71 cases produced.
Pairs with: Prime rib and ribeye steak, mushroom crostini, lamb kabobs, cheddar and parmesan cheeses
Drinking window: Savory, rich, and ripe, it will do well to cellar for a while and drink best 2030-2033.
